    Personal Foundations Course

    (learn the hows & whys to a healthy active lifestyle; learn how to design a proper workout; 50/50 cognitive and physical)

    Designed as a 9th or 10th grade level one semester course that emphasizes a relationship among fitness, nutrition, and one’s health. This course should be taught before any of the other semester courses are offered to the student. This electronic PDF curriculum contains a scope and sequence with TEKS for the semester and daily lessons (total of 84) that each contain a warm-up, the lesson focus and cool-down/closure (see sample lesson). It is designed from NASPE and Texas outcomes, but can be adapted to any state’s outcomes. The course has a classroom component and a physical activity component, although the classroom component can be accomplished in conjunction with the physical activity piece in the gym setting (see sample lesson plan). The curriculum is designed around the textbook: Foundations of Personal Fitness, Rainey & Murray, Glencoe Publishers, 2005. You will need this teacher text and the ancillary materials in order to follow these course curriculum lesson plans.

It is designed from NASPE and Texas outcomes, but can be adapted to any state’s outcomes. This one semester course is designed for students interested in learning intermediate and advanced skills for team sports such as flag football, softball, volleyball, soccer, basketball, and field/floor/scooter hockey (see sample lesson plan). The course is designed to emphasize the whole team approach where the students will learn to officiate, coach, advance their skills, and learn more advanced strategy about each sport. This course should be taught to students who have had some physical education experience (at least 2 semesters) at the high school level.
